Elite approach to diet
The rise in popularity of plant-based eating has seen elite athletes make the switch to this new diet. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics saw veganism represented by GB stars rugby ace Dan Bibby and boxer Cheavon Clarke. They join F1 racer Lewis Hamilton and tennis star Venus Williams in ditching meat from their diets. And, according to a new Vegan Society report that followed 500 people who turned to veganism since the Rio Olympics in 2016, participants said they had experienced a marked improvement in sleep, improved digestion, and increased energy levels since changing their diet.
Heart health linked to diet finds 30 year study
A long-term study into the effects of eating a plant-centred diet during young adulthood has shown that there is a link to reduced heart disease in middle age. The study, by researchers at the University of Minnesota, ran for 30 years to track changes in health that could be brought about by diet. Research author Yuni Choi said the study showed that “a nutritionally rich, plant-centered diet is beneficial for cardiovascular health.” The research also illustrated that those who improved their diet the most were less likely to develop cardiovascular disease, compared with those whose diet declined during the trial.
