Grains

Grains are dried seeds from a group called cereal plants (and no, we don’t mean plants that sprout Cheerios!). Types of grains include rye, barley, wheat, millet, quinoa and muesli.

What are whole grains?

Whole grains are unrefined, unprocessed grains, meaning they contain close to their original nutrients and fibre content. Refined grains have undergone a process to make them softer and finer and lengthen their shelf life. But this means they lose nutritional value and fibre. An example of refined grains is white bread. At Grape Tree, we provide whole grains that nourish and benefit your body.

Rye bread

Rye bread is made from milled rye flour and has a brown, dense texture. It can be eaten plain, toasted, as a sandwich, or with any of your favourite spreads.

Biona’s Organic Rye & Pumpkin Seed Bread contains the crunchy superfood pumpkin seeds. The Omega 3 Rye Bread is made with rye and golden linseed, which is excellent for joint and brain health. Or you can try Rye Chia & Flax Bread, a mixture of rye, chia and flax for a protein-boosting snack.

Barley

Barley tastes similar to brown rice, with a light, nutty flavour. You can cook barley and have it as an alternative to porridge or rice. Add it22 to soups, salads and casserole dishes. Mintons Organic Pearl Barley is free from artificial flavours and preservatives and is ideal for cooking wholesome family meals.

Wheat

Different kinds of wheat include buckwheat, wheatgerm, Bulgar cracked wheat, and wheat bran.

Grape Tree’s Organic Buckwheat is gluten-free and the perfect alternative to rice or pasta, which often contain gluten. Sprinkle naturally sweet wheatgerm on your breakfast for extra fibre, or use Bulgur Cracked Wheat as a couscous alternative. Organic Wheat Bran is high in protein and can be added to baking.

Millet

Millet is a healthy grain from the grass family. It has a pale yellow colour and tastes a bit like corn. When cooked, it has a similar consistency to couscous and is bursting with vitamins and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, copper and phosphorus.

Quinoa

Quinoa has an earthy, nutty flavour with a bite to it when cooked. It’s a fantastic replacement for cous cous, rice or even porridge. Grape Tree’s best-selling quinoa is high in fibre, iron and protein, perfect if you are looking to nurture your gut and build muscle.

Museli

Museli is made from rolled oats and tastes wonderful with a sprinkle of juicy raisins, nuts, seeds and dried fruit. Grape Tree’s Muesli Base is a nutritious blend of barley, wheat, oats and rye for additional amino acids and nutrients. Have it with milk or on top of yoghurt as a breakfast choice.
