What is molasses?
Blackstrap molasses is a natural by-product of traditional sugar cane refining. Extracted during the process of cane sugar production, in which all the beneficial nutrients are concentrated.
It is used to sweeten and flavour foods, and is the main ingredient used to distil rum.
Unlike highly refined sugars, molasses is mineral rich and high in Iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium.
What are the best substitutes for molasses?
Honey has a very similar texture to molasses and makes a good replacement. Molasses can also be substituted with maple syrup or dark corn syrup, brown sugar, and black treacle.
